  44. Another week, another batch of unconfirmed Microsoft rumors.
  45.  
  46. According to industry insiders, Microsoft will change its naming
  47. pattern for Windows and Office products to to "XP"--a move that
  48. could signal the end of the longstanding Windows 9x and Office 2000
  49. series. Microsoft also plans to integrate its next Web browser
  50. release, Internet Explorer 6, more closely with its network of Web
  51. sites such as MSN.com and Hotmail.com. Meanwhile, this week's
  52. shareware updates include many handy utilities and cool Windows
  53. tweaking tools, including 12Ghosts Pro and Flexy. Oh, and be sure

  88.      What's in a name? A lot of confusion, at least for Microsoft.
  89.      With its next-generation Windows and Office products,
  90.      Microsoft is expected to adopt a new and untried naming
  91.      convention, according to sources. The company is expected to
  92.      announce the change this week. The WinInfo Windows enthusiast
  93.      Web site is reporting that Microsoft is planning to name
  94.      Office 10, the next version of Office for Windows, "Office
  95.      XP." Other independent sources claiming familiarity with
  96.      Microsoft's Office plans said they also had heard that
  97.      Microsoft has decided to use the Office XP name for Office 10.
  98.      But one source close to the company said that Microsoft will
  99.      not re-brand the individual products comprising the Office 10
  100.      suite with the XP moniker. Word 2002, Excel 2002, PowerPoint
  101.      2002 and other individual applications will continue to use
  102.      Microsoft's year-based naming conventions, the source said. A
  103.      representative of Microsoft's Office team declined to comment
  104.      on the Office XP name. In a related move, according to
  105.      WinInfo, Microsoft also is planning to designate the Whistler
  106.      Windows 2000 successor as "Windows XP." The Personal and
  107.      Professional desktop versions of Whistler are expected to ship
  108.      this year, with server versions to follow by several months. A
  109.      representative of the Windows team did not respond by press
  110.      time to a request for comment on the Windows XP rumor.

  114. (2) Microsoft takes a page from Linux playbook
  115.  
  116.      Contrary to popular myth, Microsoft doesn't hate everything
  117.      about open source. While Microsoft executives publicly
  118.      vacillate between declaring Linux either the most hyped
  119.      operating system or the biggest threat to Windows, in reality,
  120.      the company has learned some powerful lessons from its open-
  121.      source competitors. In fact, in an unprecedented move, during
  122.      the past six months Microsoft has made available to "hundreds"
  123.      of its larger customers copies of its closely guarded Windows
  124.      source code, said Doug Miller, group product manager with
  125.      Microsoft's Windows .Net server marketing group. "Our goal is
  126.      to make this (source code) available to many hundreds of
  127.      customers," Miller said during an interview at the LinuxWorld
  128.      Conference and Expo trade show in New York this week. Source
  129.      code is the set of underlying programming instructions that
  130.      comprise an operating system. In general, open source refers
  131.      to software such as the Linux operating system that allows
  132.      programs to be modified by consumers. By contrast, Microsoft
  133.      has traditionally retained tight control over the Windows
  134.      source code, which company executives have called Microsoft's
  135.      "crown jewels." Microsoft has licensed elements of the Windows
  136.      source code to less than 100 software and hardware developers
  137.      working closely with the software giant on evolving the
  138.      operating system, according to sources close to Microsoft. The
  139.      company also has licensed the Windows source code to
  140.      universities and government bodies under restrictive terms
  141.      that allow them to work with the code but not make changes to
  142.      it. While Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has suggested over the
  143.      past two years that the company is interested in making the
  144.      Windows source code more freely available, there has been
  145.      little evidence that Microsoft actually is interested in doing
  146.      so--until now.

  150. (3) Microsoft's IE 6 test version leaked online
  151.  
  152.      Microsoft is investigating a leak of its upcoming Internet
  153.      Explorer 6 browser, which renegade software sites have posted
  154.      to the Web. A "beta," or test version of IE 6, Microsoft's
  155.      browser-in-progress, is meant to be in the hands of a few
  156.      testers who have signed nondisclosure agreements. But the
  157.      browser has been posted on The-Ctrl-Alt-Del.com and
  158.      FileClicks, software enthusiast sites with reviews and
  159.      downloads. Those sites became inaccessible shortly after CNET
  160.      News.com posted news of them last Monday afternoon. The-Ctrl-
  161.      Alt-Del.com said it had pulled the files when it learned that
  162.      Microsoft was investigating the leak, and that its hosting
  163.      provider simultaneously pulled the site because of the volume
  164.      of traffic. FileClicks could not immediately be reached for
  165.      comment. Microsoft said earlier Monday that it was
  166.      investigating the leak and that it would try to have the
  167.      software removed from the sites. "There was a (test version)
  168.      that was sent to beta testers in November under (nondisclosure
  169.      agreements), and this is obviously a breach of that in some
  170.      respect," a company representative said. "We will look into
  171.      it." November's sneak peek was an attempt to solicit feedback
  172.      from selected software developers. The company has yet to
  173.      schedule a public beta. Many of the new features in the leaked
  174.      beta, according to screen shots posted by The-Ctrl-Alt-Del.com
  175.      and an interview with its Webmaster, indicate that Microsoft
  176.      is moving more aggressively to tie its browser to its other
  177.      Web software and Web sites, a practice for which it criticized
  178.      Netscape when that company tightened integration between its
  179.      browser and Web portal. For example, the IE 6 beta includes a
  180.      new, left-hand menu bar--akin to the one that Netscape
  181.      introduced with its latest browser, Netscape 6--that includes
  182.      a series of icons linking to Microsoft media software and
  183.      properties.

  187. (4) Trademark dispute may delay Xbox debut
  188.  
  189.      Microsoft may be forced to delay the introduction of its Xbox
  190.      game console because of a trademark dispute over the Xbox
  191.      brand with a small Florida company, according to published
  192.      reports. Xbox Technologies, a holding company of software
  193.      businesses, may take Microsoft to court because it said it had
  194.      the first claim on the Xbox brand, the Financial Times
  195.      reported on its FT.com Web site. Xbox Technologies, based in
  196.      Coconut Grove, Fla., filed the first of 47 current
  197.      applications for the Xbox brand with the U.S. Patent and
  198.      Trademark Office in March 1999, FT.com said. Microsoft filed
  199.      its first application for the Xbox brand seven months later,
  200.      FT.com reported. The company refused Xbox Technologies' offer
  201.      to buy out its claim on the brand name, John Van Leeuwen, an
  202.      executive of Xbox Technologies, told FT.com. Van Leeuwen
  203.      wouldn't say if Xbox Technologies would sell the brand name.
  204.      While Microsoft may release its game console without resolving
  205.      the dispute, that may leave the company open to legal action
  206.      by Xbox Technologies, FT.com reported. Microsoft, which hired
  207.      150 developers to produce games for Xbox, refused to comment
  208.      on ongoing talks with Xbox Technologies, FT.com said. The
  209.      Redmond, Wash.-based company will spend $500 million to
  210.      introduce Xbox, its first major hardware product that will
  211.      compete with Sony Corp.'s PlayStation2, FT.com said.

  215. (5) Disney to shutter Go.com portal
  216.  
  217.      Walt Disney said Monday that it will discontinue operations of
  218.      its troubled Go.com Web portal, becoming the latest big media
  219.      company to fold its Internet efforts back into core TV
  220.      businesses. Go.com's entire work force, about 400 employees,
  221.      has been laid off with the closure, said Disney spokeswoman
  222.      Susan Murdy. The layoffs will shut down the portal's
  223.      Sunnyvale, Calif., office, where the majority of its employees
  224.      were based. The laid-off employees were given severance
  225.      packages that included 60 calendar days of pay and benefits,
  226.      according to one source. In addition, Infoseek, a search
  227.      engine in which Disney acquired a controlling interest in
  228.      1998, will likely disappear if the company can sell its
  229.      technology to a third party, Murdy said. The company may also
  230.      sell the site's traffic, giving the rights to redirect people
  231.      who visit Infoseek to another Web site, she added.  Disney's
  232.      decision follows similar moves by other big media companies.
  233.      Creating hub Web sites to vault people to other content sites
  234.      may be an ill-fated strategy, analysts say, adding that Web
  235.      users, like TV viewers, go to brands they trust.
